Supporting our Community

Ways you can donate!

You can support the Brokenhead region by giving a gift or donation in the following ways:

  • Personal - a gift during your lifetime
  • By will - a bequest may be for a specific amount or for the residue of an estate or any portion thereof.
  • Life Insurance - insurance can be an ideal way to create a major gift at a relatively low cost to the donor.
  • Memorial gift - make a memorial gift to perpetuate the name of a friend or relative.
  • Multi-year pledge - you may make an initial contribution and a commitment to add to the initial donation over a period of years.
  • Corporate - a business may find it advantageous to use the Brokenhead River Community Foundation as a vehicle for its charitable purposes by establishing it own ‘named’ fund.

All donors will receive an official receipt for income tax purposes.
Donations to the foundation are used to support charities in the Brokenhead region. You can down load a donation form in Microsoft Word format donation-form.doc or as a pdf donation-form.pdf by clicking on the appropriate link.

Our foundation has several areas where a donor can direct their support. They are:

  • North Eastman Health Association
  • General Education
  • Environment
  • Social Services
  • Sports and Community
  • Bursaries
  • Science Bursary - special bursary for students going into a science related field
  • 2006 Winter Games - fund developed to support games involved in the Winter Games of 2006
  • General Health Care
  • Elizabeth Schreyer Archive Fund
  • Unrestricted - where the board will direct the funds to an area of greatest need.

Our foundation has a donors’ book at the library in down town Beausejour, with a yearly listing of all donors. You can view the book there or download a pdf version here.donor-book-page-0-22.pdf

Chris Pawley

My wife and I decided three years ago to move back to my family roots in the Municipality of Brokenhead after living in Selkirk with our three children.  While living there I served on City of Selkirk Council for eleven years and sat on various community committees.  I felt there would be no better organization to volunteer my time for than the Brokenhead River Community Foundation.  Their overall goal is to make our community a better place to both live and work, now and in the future.

Val Jackson, Administrator

Val Jackson thum

An Easterner by birth, Val attended McMaster University in Hamilton where she met husband Ron. Ryan and Kim are their adult children.

Arriving in Beausejour in 1979 and seeing a need in the community, Val started Togs and Treasures second hand store which she managed for about 10 years. Her love of animals led her to working as a veterinary assistant to Dr. Vivan Jacob as well as caring for dogs and cats at their family-run Aspen Acres Boarding Kennels.

Both gratifying and a challenge, she feels her work for the Foundation is a way of giving back to the community that has given so much to her.

About BRCF

The Brokenhead River Community Foundation is a collection of funds and resources given by caring citizens who have chosen to make their community a better place to live and work, now and in the future.
Our Foundation is dedicated to inspiring and helping people of all backgrounds and means, creating lasting legacies to benefit the community of Brokenhead.

The Brokenhead River Community Foundation is permanent yet flexible as it can adapt to the changing needs within our community.

Community foundations are very special non-profit organizations. Since they do not have a specific charitable purpose, they provide local donors the opportunity to engage in philanthropy in a variety of ways. They provide the means for establishing endowment funds. They provide a way to achieve excellent investment yields through pooling of funds. They provide benefits to the many communities they serve.

yiplogoYoung people who care about their communities are increasingly getting involved in philanthropy. Anybody can be a philanthropist, why not us?

By forming Youth Advisory Committees (YACs) within our local community foundations, we come together to raise money, build endowment funds, and make grants to local projects. The YiP group of BRCF has been making grants to local organizations since 2002. We are in our teens, we have a lot of ideas and energy to bring to the table, and we want to make a difference – today and well into the future.

YiP are already making a difference in more than 45 communities across Canada, and the momentum is building. Come and find out more about why youth philanthropy is here to stay. To find out more about our YiP contact the BRCF.

Crop Plot Project

In the winter of 2005, a group of student started a fund raising project called the ‘crop plot’. Their plan was to get area business people to donate land, seed, chemicals, machinery, and labour to their crop growing project. They were successful! Ryan Bialek, Katie Hildebrand, Laura Thomson, and Nicole Stubel spent many hours planning and executing this project. Much of the success was due to the guidance and determination of Randy Bialek of Tyndall Grain Corp.

It was the help of the following local agricultural business:

  • Ag-Pro
  • Agri-Tel Grain
  • Agricore United
  • Beausejour Consumers Co-op
  • Edward Bialek
  • Northern Light Memorials
  • Mike Penner
  • Monsanto Chemical
  • R. M. of Brokenhead
  • Red River Equipment Ltd.
  • Se-Can
  • South Interlake Credit Union
  • Southeastern Farm Equipment
  • Springfield Colony Farms
  • Syngenta Chemicals
  • Tyndall Grain Corp
  • Wayne Stubel

The group was able to get 80 acres of land seeded to wheat. They had their battles with wild oats, weeds, and hot weather. At harvest time, they got a yield of about 40 bushels to the acres of Canadian Spring Wheat #2, with a protein of 14.5%. A fine crop indeed.

Balance Sheet:

Income
______
Wheat Sales
$ 12,023.28

Subtotal
$ 12,023.28
Expenses
________
Chemical Expenses 1160.00
Profit/Loss

$   10,863.28

As well the group had set out to get YiP into the press and they were successful again. Our two local newspapers, The Review and The Clipper, cover the story extensively. As well they were featured in agriculturally based newspapers including the Manitoba Co-operator and Farmers’ Independent Weekly. The YiP internet site carried their project and they were interviewed by Steinbach’s AM 1250 radio station. The Winnipeg Free Press ran a full page story on the project on page one of their local news section. If you want to read this article, then click on this link.
